Detroit Sober House

About the project

Project Summary

Sober houses are rehabilitationcenters for people recovering from drug or alcohol addictions. Many of the residents stay at these houses in order to transition back into the world and learn some new skills along the way. It has 20 residents living at the house. The house is not far from a main road, but a sober house staff member will accompany volunteers for the first few days that they are working at the house.

Activities

English, Maths, arts and crafts they like to learn here also Health care, HIV awareness, business, accounting can all be taught at the sober house. This sober house has a computer room so any volunteer wanting to teach computer technology is perfect. Its often a good idea to become creative when planning lessons, as this is something that tends to lack in most education in both Zanzibar and mainland Tanzania.

Schedule

Thesober house volunteer days are Monday – Friday. Volunteers can either do the morning or afternoon project. Morning starting 9pm‐12pm and afternoon 2pm‐5pm

Resources

The resources at the sober are very limited so any donations you can bring will be greatly appreciated. Stationary such as Pencils, erasers, sharpeners ,rulers and education books etc

Special points

The residents at this sober house are generally Muslim. We ask volunteers to respect a more professional dress code on Zanzibar due to the large Muslim Population. Maximum 4 volunteers needed for this project.
