Please note that this kit list is intended to help you plan what you may need to take with you and Therefore; you may not need all of the listed items on your travels.

Also, please be aware that the weather can change considerably from winter to summer and you should pack according to when you are travelling to ensure that you have the appropriate clothing.

Before you depart

• Consult your doctor about Malaria



• Have all vaccines up to date



• Get Travel insurance



• Confirm your passport is still valid / for at least 6 months on arrival



• Check current visa regulations with the embassy (as of April 2010 the tourist visa is $50 for all nationalities however for Americans & Irish nationals the rate is $100 and for Pakistani nationals, the rate is $200). To be paid in cash at immigrations.



• Register with embassies if applicable



• Call bank and credit card companies to inform them of the trip



• Prepare to have an adventure!

Personal Admin

• Passport, insurance certificates, flight itinerary and personal documentation



• A copy of your completed immigration paperwork



• Photocopies of all the above to be left at home with your next of kin & sent to your personal email address



• Yellow fever vaccination card



• Spending money / ATM- and credit cards



• Proof of inoculations (please speak to your GP about necessary immunisations)



• Secure, waterproof bag for documents and money: sealable plastic bags will do

General

• Your camera



• Personal hygiene kit, toiletries and towel



• Small mirror



• Sunglasses (high UV protection)



• Sun cream (high factor needed)



• Small torch (head torch is preferable)



• Diary and writing pens



• Camera/batteries/film or memory card & battery charger



• Day pack/rucksack for everyday use



• Mobile phone – set for roaming



• I-pod / I-pod speakers



• Plug adaptor



• Alarm clock/watch



• Lap top computer for downloading photos and internet access, if you have one



• Travel wash for clothes (biodegradable recommended)



• Money belt



• Swahili book & Travel guide, such as Lonely Planet or Rough Guide



• The evenings can be quiet so bring books, cards, board games etc to play



• Binoculars if you are planning to go on safari

Clothing

• Sets of outdoor loose fitting cotton clothes with full arm and leg cover for cooler mornings and evenings



• A pair of boots or sturdy trainers (only consider bringing these if you are planning to do some serious walking, otherwise flip-flops suffice!)



• Respectable clothing for your project: T-shirts, longer shorts or trousers



• Casual clothes



• Going out clothes for dancing/clubbing on the weekends



• Flip flops / sandals



• Swimwear & Beach Towel



• Sun hat/bandana



• Underwear – enough for at least 7 days, possibly more



• Pyjamas/nightwear



• Lightweight fleece or jumper



• Waterproof jacket & rain boots (if coming in the rainy season)



• Warm clothes for winter and early mornings.



• Shorts, trousers / skirts, t shirts and vests in light or bright colors or patterns in thin natural materials (these are good for wearing in the heat, won’t show the dirt and will be easy to wash)

Medical Kit

• Hand sanitizer and wet wipes



• Personal first aid kit with anti-bacterial cream



• Personal medication e.g. anti malarial tablets/prescription drugs/inhalers/antihistamine/rehydration sachets etc.



• Painkillers, Anti-Diarrhea, Cold/Flu,..



• Contact lenses and solution if necessary



• Plasters



• Lip balm with SP



• Tweezers (not in hand luggage!)



• Scissors (not in hand luggage!)



• Sanitary products for women (Not all products are easily available here)



• Mosquito repellent (ensure it contains DEET or equivalent)



• Antihistamine/anti-itch cream for bites



• Ear plugs – in case you sleep next to a snorer!

Please Note: We recommend you take some shirts/blouses, trousers/long skirts and a good pair of shoes or sandals if you are working within a school placement. This is to show respect of African culture and also gain respect from the children you will be working with. You can wear casual clothing in your spare time, though these must be appropriate.
