St Teresia is a nursery school 6 kilometres out of Stone Town in a place called Mwera. The school was opened on 8th January 2013 and has only one class with 39 students and 2 teachers. The school was just started for Christians but now there are both Christian and Islamic students. The nursery age at this school is 3‐ 5 year olds
Kiswahili, Maths, Science and English are taught to all the students. Volunteers are needed mainly to teach English and Maths but are always welcome to assist in any of the other subjects or activities. It’s always a good idea when you’re planning a lesson to think of something creative as this lacks in education and the schools in Zanzibar.
St Teresia school is open 5 days a week volunteers are expected to work from 8:00am to 12:30pm. Holidays are three weeks during the end of December and beginning of January.
As St Teresia is a new project and the school opened only a few years ago so it doesn’t have a lot of resources so any donations would be gratefully received. Especially Pens, pencils, rubbers, sharpeners and text books.
The children in St Teresia are both Christian and Muslim. However with Zanzibar being 92% Muslim we ask volunteers to dress modestly both in school and around Zanzibar to respect the religion and culture. Between 2 – 4 volunteers are needed at this project
